The annual ‘perunal’ is celebrated on the 29th of April every year when the Elanjikal Chapel is bedecked with festoons, buntings and oil lamps. The ‘perunal’ is announced by a traditional ‘chenda’ ensemble which, with its compelling beat adds a festive air to the occasion. Prayers are offered at the church and the day is marked by special services and colourful processions in remembrance of the patron saint Mar Gregorios Abdul Jaleel Bawa, or Vallioppan.
The ‘raasa’ (festival procession), one of the main rituals of the ceremony is accompanied by the drummers while the congregation performs the three mandatory perambulations around the church. Many rituals here are local and indigenous, indicative of the syncretic influences of the Orthodox Church.
On the conclusive day, a traditional sadya is prepared for those who participate in the ceremonies. In the past, the meal used to be served on plantain leaves.
